8. dear sighted people

dear sighted people:

We have a lot to say to you, but a lot of it is good! First, if you didn’t hear our last episode on our music tastes and a bit on audio description, there’s no time like the present to go check it out!

Next, we also wanted to call attention to the poor audio quality on Cass’ side. She had some technical difficulties and had to record in a different place than usual, which is why it sounds funky. Don’t worry though, we’ll be back to our regular quality next time!

This week we decided to address our sighted listeners, and while we know you all love a good rant, we wanted to flip the script and talk about our favorite things you do to accommodate and include us. Like we say in the episode, we don’t want you all to wait on us hand and foot, but there are some small things you do that make us feel seen we wanted to highlight. We hope you enjoy and as always, please email us at hello@rarewithflair.com or send us a message on our official instagram!

episode summary

First, we start out by addressing election day in the US, which fell on the day this was released, and talk about the importance of voting. We also talk about our plans for halloween (which fell after this was released) and who we’d dress up as. Then we launch right into our list of fifteen things we love that sighted people do. Within it, we also address inappropriate or frustrating things sighted people do and tell stories about both positive and negative things. Finally, we end on a game suggested by Cassandra’s dad of get-to-know-you questions we ask each other.

show notes

  • First, we apologize for the poor audio quality on Cass’ side. She had some technical difficulties recording this episode, but next episode should be back to normal!
  • The day this episode is released is election day in the US! If you’re listening the day this is released and you’re a US citizen, don’t forget to go vote today if you haven’t already!
    • Cass mentions Vote411, which is an excellent place to start your research on local politics and compare candidates
  • The Saturday before this episode was released was Halloween! Case and Cass dressed up, so we wanted to put those pictures in the notes!
  • Casey mentions we’ve had over 50 reviews on Apple Podcasts, which means we’re halfway to hearing Casey’s “dog voice,” as mentioned in our intro episode. Please give us a rating and help us get to 100!
  • Below, we’re listing an outline of our fifteen things for sighted people! For more details, listen to the episode!
Casey is dressed as Toph from Avatar the last Airbender. She is wearing a green outfit, a black wig, and is holding a rock over her head

dear sighted people, we love when you:

  1. Read things on screens, be it subtitles or text. We also love it when we go to the movies and you take into consideration where we can sit.
  2. Read menus on walls or describe food at a buffet.
  3. Give descriptive directions or describe notable things around us that we might miss.
  4. Say our name and your name when you start a conversation with us.
  5. Let us know when there are steps that are hard to see.
  6. Offer us a ride without us asking.
  7. Help us find things in crowded situations (like bathrooms at sporting events).
  8. Jump in to educating people around us or stick up for us.
  9. Ask genuine questions as opposed to making assumptions about us.
  10. Come find us when we’re meeting somewhere.
  11. Ask if we need accommodations.
  12. Let us know people are staring sometimes.
  13. Let us go “sighted guide” with you, meaning letting us grab onto you sometimes.
  14. Ask for what we need, but respect our independence and autonomy.
  15. Invite us places even if we can’t go because of germ exposure lacking stamina because of chronic illness.
